Shannon Lee - Our Biggest Loser!

I confess that I feel like a fraud guest writing for the South Riding Wellness Connection newsletter.  When Susan approached me to write about my weight loss and involvement with the boot camp, my initial thought was there was no way as I haven’t consistently done any of the things we know we should do to lose weight.  I have not regularly kept a food journal, cut out processed foods, white foods and sugar.  I was not the voice of how to lose weight.  I usually start my morning with a Diet Coke, adore refrigerated peppermint pattis and have to remind myself that it is five fruits and vegetables a day, not a week.   In addition to my less than stellar dietary habits, I have never been known for my athletic  talents or accomplishments, so the idea of me being where I am today surprises no one more than myself.

I discovered Julie and Susan and the boot camp last March and on a whim signed up for one month (and only one month as that little voice said working out was so NOT me, one does not suddenly become athletic at 39 years old).  I told myself that one month was enough to get me out of the winter blahs and then spring would be here and that would be that.  Given past history that was about as long as I would ever stick with anything exercise related.  (Think Thigh Master, Buns of Steel videos, The Ab Roller;  even the big ticket item of a treadmill.  All have graced my doorstep and all have quickly abandoned.) Well one month turned into two, turned into three and I am now approaching the one year mark. What happened? I simply showed up and…..
I have lost weight and inches.  I no longer have random aches and pains (instead it is the good kind of sore after you discover muscles you didn’t know existed). I have lost that whiny little voice of “I can’t”. I can’t hold a plank, do more than five sit ups, jog instead of walk.  I may chose not to but I now know that I can. Silenced is that little voice that said this isn’t me, I cant stick with it, I am not a physically strong or physically confident person.  So many changes because of such a small investment.

I have gained strength, stamina and flexibility.  I have found a commitment to myself that I have not seen in years.  I have learned how to connect with my body, listen to it, honor it and believe in it.  Instead of telling myself I cannot lift 10 pounds instead of 8, I think well why not? I have found friendships and a community of support in Julie and Susan and all of the ladies at the bootcamp that I didn’t know I needed so much.  My involvement with the boot camp has been a wonderful combination of losses and gains all accomplished by …  just showing up.
